After Napoleon's disastrous Russian campaign of 1812 initiated a series of defeats that led to his abdication in 1814 and exile to the island of Elba. The monarchy was briefly restored under Louis XVIII. Napoleon returned to France in March 1815, but his efforts to regain power were totally crushed at the battle of Waterloo. The monarchy under Louis XVIII was again restored in 1815 and lasted until 1824. These historically important coins were struck only for a few years. This coin in such a high grade is scarce and beautiful.
